Night Vision Devices -- The Ultimate in BackCountry Toys

Many nights in the backcountry are far from dark. A bright moon and a sky full of stars can throw off enough light to allow for reading a book, but add cloud cover, mountains or trees and it gets dark awfully fast. When you need to see in the dark, you have two choices - you either turn on a light, or use one of the many available night vision devices (NVD). The NVD could be the ultimate backcountry toy.

There are two broad categories of NVD. Image Enhancement devices collect small amounts of light and amplify them to the point where the human eye can observe the object. Thermal Imaging devices capture the high end of the infrared light spectrum which is emitted as heat by objects. Image Enhancement devices will provide a much crisper image with detail while Thermal Imaging devices show regions of heat. Currently, five Generations of NVD exist. Generations 0 and 1 are less expensive and typically produce a poor image quality. Generations 2, 3 and 4 have increasingly better image quality and an equally increasing price to match.Like choosing many other types of technology, choosing the correct NVD is all about how you are going to use it. When most people think of night vision capabilities, they think about spy movies, the military or law enforcement - applications where it is vital for the good guys to see without being seen by the bad guys. A drop in pricing over the past few years has made a NVD affordable for campers, hunters, hikers and a wide variety of other outdoor enthusiasts. However, high-end devices used for specialized purposes remain quite expensive.Applications for NVD are actually quite diverse. They include but are not limited to: military, law enforcement, hunting, wildlife observation, surveillance, security, navigation, hidden-object detection, spelunking and entertainment. NVD can be found on helicopters, rifles, camcorders, cameras, boats.just about anywhere. A new craze found at up-scale gatherings is called A Dinner in the Dark Party where guests wear an NVD throughout their dining experience.

Many outdoor enthusiasts are beginning to discover the wonderful world that can be found after darkness falls in the backcountry. If you like to camp, hike or hunt, chances are good an NVD will be perfect for you. Use this information and youll Get It Right The First Time. Get Outdoors!

But;s how to perform a spectacle! Batman Live opened in Newcastle last night - only the second city in the world to host it. Entertainment Editor GORDON BARR was at the show, at the Arena until Sunday

Byline: GORDON BARR

For Newcastle's opening night it was only right that Washington's Michael Pickering took up the mantle of Dick Grayson and Robin, while Wearside's Christopher Price played not only The Riddler but also Joe Chill and John Grayson.Judging by last night's cheers - that shouldn't be a problem.KAPOW! Robin Michael Pickering and Batman Sam HeughanWhat audiences then witness is a non-stop thrill-ride across Gotham City - a ride that transforms Bruce and Dick into the legendary crime-fighters Batman and Robin. It is a production of two halves - Act One setting the scene, Act Two getting right in there.IT'S fair to say I had great personal anticipation ahead of seeing this new production.Acrobats suspended in the air, fighting henchmen, magical illusions, stunning scenery and special effects were all part of the Batman Live experience.Justice not revenge is the prevailing theme. If there's any justice in the entertainment world, then this will be a global hit.The latter two, of course, add that extra evil ingredient to the show, but ultimately it is our superheroes Batman and Robin who steal the limelight.Fast forward those nine months and it's great to see those visions and values have come to fruition in, if anything, a bigger and better way than imagined. There's the Big Top of Haly's Circus, the lower depths of Arkham Asylum, the glittering peaks of the Penguin's Iceberg Lounge and, of course, the wondrous Batcave.CAPTION(S):This isn't a musical, nor is it a play. What it is, is a mishmash of both, with more than a hint of circus added in, a touch of camp and a few cinematic moments for added value. It may be Batman Live, but the night ultimately belongs to Robin - and what a gig for local lad Michael to land.Nine months ago I was flown to New York City to meet the creative team behind Batman Live at the Bat HQ at DC Comics, and even then there was an almighty buzz surrounding the show. What's more, Newcastle was going to be only the second city in the world to see it. Kapow!Creative visions, big production values and DC's own stamp of approval back then certainly gave the forthcoming show that extra edge.Bruce and Dick, both orphaned as youngsters, must first learn to overcome their own fears and forge their own family if they're going to survive the combined forces of Batman's larger-than-life rogues gallery: The Joker, The Penguin, Catwoman, The Riddler, Two-Face, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.Plus there was the aerodynamic, beautifully-crafted new Batmobile - a sight to behold. It got perhaps the biggest cheer of the night - until, that is, Batman and Robin came together for the first time.Faithfully adapted from the DC Comics characters and stories, Batman Live tells the tale of Robin's quest for justice. This leads him to follow in the footsteps of his hero, the mysterious vigilante known as Batman - much to the dismay of his protective guardian, millionaire Bruce Wayne, who secretly happens to be Batman. They were part of a comic book that came to life - and how! The pages unfolded courtesy of a huge LED backscreen, which worked in tandem with the on-stage real-life performers.Put aside any preconceptions of a certain failed Spiderman Broadway musical - this promised to be anything but!

Initial Flight Safety Report for CF-18 Accident of Nov 17, 2010

The "From the Investigator" (FTI) initial flight safety report for the November 17, 2010, crash of CF-18 aircraft number CF188789 near Cold Lake, Alberta, is available on the Air Force Directorate of Flight Safety website.

The Flight Safety investigation is still ongoing, but the FTI is the team's initial report containing the facts of the accident as they are known at this time. Conclusions, cause factors and recommendations are not contained in the FTI report. A final Flight Safety Investigation Report (FSIR) will be published on the same website, normally about one year after the accident. This initial report indicates that the pilot was conducting a night training mission using Night Vision Goggles and became disoriented during an instrument approach when his landing light reflected off the falling snow. The reflected light also washed out the instrument indications in his Head Up Display. The pilot ejected safely without injury, and was recovered by a Search and Rescue crew. The aircraft crashed and was destroyed on impact. The Flight Safety investigation team continues to focus on human factors associated with the accident, including disorientation, organizational pressures, and training practices. 1 Canadian Air Division has already put in place measures to ensure that pilots have more night flying experience before undergoing Night Vision Goggle training. The Canadian Forces Flight Safety system is one of the most respected in the world. Its goal is not to assign blame, but rather to determine the causes of accidents and to make recommendations that will help prevent accidents in the future. The FTI can be viewed at the DFS web site as follows: http://www.airforce.forces.gc.ca/dfs-dsv/nr-sp/index-eng.asp?id=11977

The Way Night Vision Works

Most people are familiar with the concept of night vision. After all, it is seen in countless action and spy movies. However, the truth is that night vision is more than a fantastical concept; it is reality. And with goggles, night scopes, binoculars and monoculars, it is possible to see on a moonless, cloudless night. In fact, the technology is so advanced that you can see a person standing more than 200 yards away. Thats twice the length of a football field! The remarkable feat of human sight at night is accomplished one of two ways: image enhancement or thermal imaging.

Night vision products make excellent additions to any surveillance collection, and they can be very helpful in locating objects or people in dark places. You will pay in a price range from under $300 to more than $15,000, depending on features, accuracy, and purpose of the accessories you choose to aid your night vision. The other way night vision works is by thermal imaging. This is technology that works exclusively in the upper portion of infrared light. Rather than gathering reflected light, this is heat that is given off by objects or people. This is known as thermal infrared, and it occupies the largest amount of space as part of the infrared spectrum (which is at the lower end of the light spectrum, below what is detectible by the human eye). This means that there is a great deal of wavelengths that can be detected by the proper devices. Because thermal imaging works by putting the heat coming from objects in visible form, it is to be expected that some objects will appear clearer than others. Humans, for example, emit more heat than a tree, and so a tree will not be as clear.(c) 2005 Copyright www.spyassociates.com. This article is about: Night Vision
